About Area Conversions

History of the are, the hectare and the acre
The metric system gave land its own units: the are, a square ten meters on each side, and the hectare, a hundred ares. The acre, older and English, is now defined through the meter too.
- A French law on weights and measures created the are, a square 10 m on each side, as the unit for land; a hectare is 100 ares.
- Six countries agreed on an international yard of exactly 0.9144 m, but US land surveys kept the slightly different US survey foot.
- The United States retired the US survey foot: from 2023 surveys in feet use the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m, so the US acre, too, is exactly 4,046.8564224 m².
